Manufacturing Process
Papier-Mâché is a French term meaning "chewed paper" or "mashed paper." It describes a crafting technique in which paper is soaked and pulped to create moulded objects. In traditional Kashmiri Papier-Mâché, the creation process consists of two main stages: Sakhtsazi and Naqashi.
1. Sakhtsazi: Crafting the Foundation
- Preparation of Paper Pulp: Paper pulp is soaked in water for three to four days, then ground in a traditional stone mortar to achieve a smooth consistency.
- Shaping and Drying: The pulp is sun-dried before being mixed with atji, a natural rice glue. This mixture is then moulded using clay or wooden forms. The paper is carefully removed from the mould before it fully dries, allowing artisans to shape and coat it for a smooth finish.
- Surface Protection: A thin layer of butter paper is applied to protect the surface and prevent the outer paint from cracking.
2. Naqashi: Final Painting and Decoration
- Base Coating: A base coat of paint is applied to create a canvas for detailed artwork.
- Hand-Painted Designs: Each piece is hand-painted using a special brush made from cat tail hairs, allowing artisans to create intricate patterns. Premium pieces are made using colours derived from minerals, organic sources, and vegetables.
- Motifs: The artist draws motifs from nature, including vibrant flowers, enchanting jungle themes, and local symbols like paisley and the chinar leaf, reflecting the rich cultural heritage of Kashmir.
- Finishing: The pieces are finally finished and coated with a clear lacquer for preservation and safe use.
