History of Bastar Iron Art
The Bastar region of Chhattisgarh is rich in iron ore, leading the Gond and Maria tribes to focus on ironwork. They started by crafting farming tools and hunting weapons, but their expertise grew over time. The Gond tribe worships ‘Budha Dev,’ initially associated with the sacred saja tree. As they realised the strength of iron, they began to see their god in iron too, creating religious items like tridents and figurines. Their craftsmanship gained recognition, enabling them to travel, learn, and develop diverse designs that are now widely admired.
Manufacturing Process
- Scrap Iron: The process starts with recycled scrap iron, collected from homes or local markets.
- Beating: The scrap iron is heated and repeatedly hammered to create the desired shape. This stage demands skill and precision to achieve the correct form.
- Cutting and Filing: After shaping, any extra iron is trimmed away. The piece is then carefully filed to smooth out rough or sharp edges, ensuring a polished finish.
- Joints: Rivets are used to join different parts securely, making the structure strong and durable.
- Varnish: Finally, the product is coated with a varnish or oil-based layer. This enhances its shine and protects it from rust, ensuring it lasts longer.
