About the Craft
The Jawaja durries of Beawar, Rajasthan, crafted by the Artisans' Alliance, reflect a rich cultural legacy. Emerging as a solution for weavers facing competition from synthetic fabrics, these non-pile rugs are distinct for their vibrant colours, geometric patterns, and natural materials like cotton, wool, and jute. Originating from a rural development initiative in 1975, led by IIM Ahmedabad and NID, this craft empowered marginalised communities by blending traditional skills with contemporary design. Today, Jawaja durries embody resilience and artistry, reaching homes worldwide.
Manufacturing Process
- Sorting: The process begins with selecting the finest natural fibres like wool and cotton. These fibres are carefully sorted to ensure only the highest quality materials form the base of the rug, ensuring strength and softness.
- Carding: The sorted fibres are carded to align and smooth them, creating soft, uniform strands. This step readies the fibres for spinning, ensuring they are easy to work with and consistent in texture.
- Spooling and Spinning: Using traditional spinning wheels, artisans transform the carded fibres into strong, durable yarns. These yarns are spooled to maintain their quality and prepared for dyeing and weaving.
- Designing: The heart of every flat-weave lies in its design. Patterns, often inspired by geometric shapes or cultural motifs, are carefully conceptualised and mapped out. This blueprint guides the weaving process, ensuring precision and artistry.
- Dyeing: Yarns are dyed in rich, vibrant hues using natural or synthetic dyes. Each strand is soaked and sun-dried, locking in the colour and enhancing the fibres’ strength. The dyed yarns set the tone for the rug’s overall aesthetic.
- Weaving: The weaving begins on traditional looms, where artisans interlace dyed weft threads with warp threads. Row by row, patterns emerge, brought to life by skilled hands.
- Finishing: After weaving, the edges are secured with stitched or braided finishes to ensure durability. Fringes are added, threads are trimmed, and the rug is washed and sun-dried for a refined, vibrant finish. A final quality check ensures every piece is flawless.
