Preserving cultural tradition
India’s terracotta art, with roots in the Indus Valley Civilisation, is a timeless craft that embodies the country’s cultural richness and artistic heritage. Its earthy tones and mystical connection to the five natural elements—earth, air, fire, water, and ether—make it a symbol of harmony with nature. Indian artisans, celebrated for their creativity, craft intricate statues, vases, lamps, and decor, blending tradition with innovation Passed down through generations, this timeless art has embraced modern creativity, featuring vibrant hand-painted designs. This seamless blend of tradition and contemporary aesthetics has made it a cherished treasure in homes across the globe.
Manufacturing Process
- Clay Preparation: The clay is refined manually using fine nets to remove impurities like dust particles, stones, and lumps. Then, the raw materials, sand and clay, are mixed with water to prepare the dough.
- Clay Mixing and Kneading: Artisans mix the clay by stamping and crushing in this stage for better consistency. This process ensures that the clay is bendable and free from air pockets, enhancing the quality of the final artefact.
- Throwing Process: In this throwing process, the clay is placed at the centre of the potter's wheel and rotated with the help of a bamboo stick. Artisans skillfully shape the clay into the desired form as the wheel spins. After this, the trim parts are joined together to create large objects.
- Smoothening and Drying: After shaping, the outer object is smoothened using a wet cloth and dried under the sun for 2-3 days. The products are covered with fabric to avoid over drying and cracking.
- Firing and Hand-painting: The objects are fired in a Bhatti, a traditional open furnace within a circular area. After firing, the surface is again smoothened, cleaned, and adorned with hand-painted motifs to achieve the final product.
