Preserving Timeless Traditions of Craftsmanship
Jaipur blue pottery, introduced to India by Persian artisans in the 14th century, initially featured cobalt blue dye and intricate designs. The craft evolved significantly under Mughal Emperor Akbar, blending Persian and Mughal aesthetics. By the 19th century, Jaipur’s Sawai Ram Singh II played a crucial role in localising the craft, inviting Persian artisans to adapt their techniques with local materials. This led to the development of vibrant colours and distinctive patterns of Jaipur’s blue pottery, establishing it as a renowned symbol of the city’s cultural heritage.
Manufacturing Process
- Preparing the Material: A mix of quartz powder, ground glass, saji, katira gond, and multani mitti is combined into a smooth dough and left to rest.
- Making the Mold: Moulds made from Plaster of Paris are dried and used to shape the dough.
- Forming the Product: The dough is rolled, pressed into the mould with burnt wood dust, and left to dry in open air.
- Smoothening: Rough edges are smoothed with an emery stone and sandpaper, and pores are filled using slurry. This process is repeated twice or thrice for the best finishing.
- Painting & Colouring: Products are hand-painted with traditional motifs and patterns. They start with outlines and then fill in the colours inside. These colours are oxides of ferrometals mixed with edible gum for binding.
- Glazing: A glaze made from powdered glass and other materials is applied evenly to the product and set to dry before firing.
- Firing: The pottery is fired in a traditional kiln for 4-5 hours; controlled low temperature is maintained to avoid cracks. The kiln is left for cooling for 2-3 days and then products are taken out.
Note
- Handle with Care: Blue pottery is delicate and can break easily. Clean with a soft, damp cloth. Avoid abrasive materials and harsh chemicals as they may damage the surface.
- Avoid Extreme Temperatures: Do not expose to extreme temperatures, as rapid changes can cause cracking. Also, avoid using it in a microwave and dishwasher.
- Handcrafted Variations: Each product may feature slight variations in colour or craftsmanship, which add to its uniqueness and should not be seen as defects.
- Image Discrepancies: Due to variations in screen resolutions, images may differ from the actual product.
