Preserving Timeless Traditions of Craftsmanship
Bidri is a mesmerizing craft from Bidar, Karnataka, where silver or gold is artfully inlaid on black metal. Persian artisans introduced this art during the Bahmani Sultanate, blending Turkish, Arabic, and Persian designs. Once etched on steel or copper, today's Bidriware uses zinc and copper alloys, showcasing intricate Mughal designs on the matt black surface. Adorning pieces like platters and paan boxes, Bidri remains a treasured gem in the artistry of southern India.
Manufacturing Process
- Melting the Alloy: The creation of Bidri pieces begins with soil moulds made pliable using castor oil and resin. A combination of 95% zinc and 5% copper is heated to 800°F, then poured into these moulds and allowed to cool. The resulting cast item is refined through filing and buffing to achieve a smooth finish.
- Casting the Article: Once smoothed, the piece is treated with a copper sulphate solution, creating a temporary black coating. Artisans then hand-draw intricate designs onto this matte surface with a sharp stylus, providing a canvas for their artistry.
- Engraving and Inlaying: The item is secured on a waxed stone, allowing artisans to engrave designs using small chisels. Fine silver wires and sheets are then carefully hammered into the engraved grooves to showcase geometric patterns and floral motifs.
- Oxidizing: Finally, the nearly finished piece is dipped in a solution made from centuries-old soil from Bidri Fort and ammonium chloride. This darkens the surface while leaving the silver intact, creating a brilliant contrast. A coat of oil is applied to enhance the rich matte finish.
